We are really excited
about the 2011 Mavic Ksyrium
Equipe. Very few wheel sets that retail for under $500 that can truly
claim to be "race ready", but after years of hovering just below
1800gm/pair, Mavic has dropped the weight of the Ksyrium Equipe to an impressive
1690gm -- and they did it where it matters the most, with a lighter rim.
It's an honest weight -- our first pair in stock weighed 1670 on our shop
scales.
The Mavic
Ksyrium
Elite is one of the best road wheels on the market, period. It's
light, it's strong, and it's easy to service. Since the Ksyrium Elite
sells for under $700, it's also one of the best values on the road market.
At 1550gm/pair, the Ksyrium Elite is an upgrade for virtually any road bike that
sells for under $3,000. The Ksyrium Elite is one of the big reasons we're
a Mavic dealer, an affordable performance wheel ideal for Vermont roads.
The same goes for the
Ksyrium Elite's off-road sister, the Mavic
Crosstrail Disc.
Mavic is a competition-oriented company, and it's
their belief that a stiffer, more durable wheel benefits a competitor more than
a lighter wheel. As a result, Mavic wheels are seldom if ever
lightest-in-category, yet you will see more Mavics in the Green Mountain Stage
Race than any other brand.
Mavic wheels are
exceptionally reliable and easy-to-service. We like the fact that Mavic still uses steel cassette bodies;
Mavic accepts the weight penalty because steel is the most durable material for
a cassette body. Mavic wheels that use Mavic's Zicral aluminum spokes are
not for everyone when it comes to comfort, but Mavics that use carbon or steel
spokes damp vibration nicely, making them great all-day wheels.
Mavic road wheels are
built with aluminum, aluminum/carbon, and all carbon rims. All Mavic mountain bike wheels use aluminum
rims, and Mavic also makes great pedals and shoes.
Here's a
glimpse at road wheels, road pedals, and mountain wheels, with links so you can compare:

Best value in
performance wheels anywhere, not just in the Mavic line. Elites and SLs use the same rim,
so Elites weigh only 65gm more per pair than SLs. The Elite's stainless steel
spokes offer a more comfortable
ride than the Zicral aluminum spokes of the SLs.

Mavic R-Sys
These are some of the nicest climbing alloy clinchers
you can get. They're so light and so stiff, you'd swear you were on
light carbon rim wheels as you go uphill, which is why we like to
ride the R-Sys ourselves. The hollow carbon spokes do a fantastic job of
damping road vibration, so despite the stiffness of the R-Sys, it is a
very comfortable wheel over long distances -- definitely a more
comfortable ride than the aluminum spoke Ksyrium SL. After some
early problems with spoke breakage, Mavic switched from unidirectional
carbon to a carbon weave for stronger spoke construction. The R-Sys spoke is
now just as durable as the aluminum Ksyrium SL spoke. |

A respectable weight

Only 110gms more than Mavic's flagship Cosmic Carbone Ultimate, at a
little more than half the price. Great choice for a B.U.M.P.S.
competitor who won't use tubulars.
