Long-lasting, great ride quality, classic look -- this describes Raleigh steel.

In an age where more exotic materials dominate the road bike market, steel still has its place.  Steel remains a favorite of such renowned custom frame builders as Serotta and Independent Fabrications.  Yet there are very few high-quality production steel frame bicycles on the market today.

Raleigh steel very nicely fills this void.

Our favorite in Raleigh's steel line is the Raleigh Record Ace, a nicely crafted lugged frame built with Reynolds 520 Butted Chromoly tubing for the traditional look, but with the ultra-modern Shimano Ultegra 6700 drive train.  The Record Ace makes another nod to tradition with its Brooks Swift saddle, with chromoly rails.  The bike looks far more expensive than its modest $1750 price tag.  Check out this review in Bicycling Magazine

We have a 55cm Record Ace on closeout.

Considerations:

You need to be able to touch the floor with your fingertips to comfortably ride this frame -- it's not for a low flexibility rider.
The cranks are standard 53-39, not compact 50-34.  We can alleviate this by swapping the 11-25 cassette for an 11-28.
The wheels are good, but the bike will feel even livelier with an upgrade.  Our wheel upgrade credit for the Record Ace is $150.

The cross-country bike tour rider should check out the Raleigh Sojourn, and the commuter should consider the Raleigh Clubman.  For those who yearn for the simplicity of a single-speed, see our Specials page for an '07 Raleigh One Way, on sale.
