Two-piece crank design The two-piece crank design is one of the most exciting advances in mountain component technology. The two-piece design has been around since the early '90s (remember Sweetwings?). It didn't have a real impact on the market, however, until Shimano introduced its new XTR group, followed a year later by the new XT. Other companies like Bontrager, Truvativ, and FSA soon followed suit. The competition kept prices down and drove quality up. A two-piece crank design:
