Two-piece crank design

The two-piece crank design is one of the most exciting advances in mountain component technology.  The two-piece design has been around since the early '90s (remember Sweetwings?).  It didn't have a real impact on the market, however, until Shimano introduced its new XTR group, followed a year later by the new XT.  Other companies like Bontrager, Truvativ, and FSA soon followed suit.  The competition kept prices down and drove quality up.

A two-piece crank design:

bulletPermanently bonds an oversize hollow bottom bracket axle with the drive side of the crank
bulletUses oversize sealed bearings mounted outside the bottom bracket shell of the frame

The result?  An extremely stiff crankset that enhances your power transfer.  The two-piece design is also easier to maintain.  Look for it on performance-oriented ATBs.
