At the low end, a hardtail gives the entry-level rider a lighter and more maneuverable machine that's much more reliable than the cheapest full suspension bikes.  At the high end, a hardtail offers experienced riders the lightest bikes possible for cross-country.

A hard-tail jump bike is an economical alternative to full-suspension freeride.  The frames sacrifice light weight for incredible durability.  A hard-tail jump bike is definitely a better investment than a cheap full-suspension that isn't designed for tricks.
