The Raleigh RX1.0 is absolutely the best current value for a budget 'cross bike.  For a closeout price of $895, you get:

High quality butted aluminum frame with fairly aggressive geometry.
Easton EC70 X fork w/alloy steerer -- this is a fork well suited for the RX1.0 geometry.
BB30 bottom bracket -- no lateral give, so this bike climbs like a rocket.
Shimano 5700 105 shifting system -- near Dura-Ace performance at a fraction of the price, with a capacity of up to 28 teeth on the back.
$150 wheel upgrade credit:  Trade in the stock wheels for Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels for an additional $300, and you have a race-ready bike for $1600.  Or lose another 140gms and upgrade to Mavic Ksyrium Elites, race-ready for $1800.

The RX1.0 is a little too aggressive for the comfort-oriented casual rider, but that's the whole point.  This is a bike for:

The competitor with a limited budget
The performance-oriented group rider who doesn't race but still likes to be the first one to the top

Raleigh is pretty cautious about maintaining inventory for bikes that retail for over $1k, so the availability of the RX1.0 is limited.  That said, we currently have the two most popular sizes for the RX1.0 in stock, 53 and 55cm.
