What Makes Lynskey Custom Different?

We work together with David Lynskey to design the best frame for you, based on:

Your physique
Your riding style
Your desired ride qualities
Desired frame weight

It's the last item in this list that makes Lynskey unique among current custom titanium frame builders.  Lynskey can hit exceptionally low target weights for custom frames, because Lynskey shapes and butts their titanium tubes with the newest, state-of-the-art machinery in the industry.  No one else has it, because David Lynskey designed and built this machinery himself, from scratch.  See PezCycling News' July 24 article for a look at how Lynskey has tooled up, and how they create their tubing sets.

Custom or Houseblend?

Custom is the way to go if:

You're a weight weenie with an average-to-slender build -- the already low weights of Lynskey House Blend frames can be made even lower by tube selection and additional butting.
You're a Clydesdale or a power sprinter -- Lynskey can tweak the stiffness of your custom frame and still hit a weight that's close to House Blend.
Your anatomy just doesn't work with House Blend geometry.
You want a mountain, cross, or touring frame at a level not offered in House Blend.

Whether you're 5'2" or 6'7" or anywhere else on the scale of human geometry, we can put you on your dream frame.

Custom and House Blend

Lynskey also offers custom House Blend frames.  These use the same tubing sets as regular House Blend frames, cut to custom lengths.  Two examples of custom houseblend:

If you want an R2230 or R330, but you prefer the Race Pace geometry of an R430 or a Helix (longer top tube, shorter head tube)
If you want a Helix or an R430, but you want the more upright Competition geometry of an R230 or R330 (shorter top tube, longer head tube)

Our bike fitter, Justin Crocker, draws on his 30 years of experience to:

Gather information about your prior riding experience and your goals for the future.
Measure you.
Dial you into a position that is both comfortable and efficient.
Help you to decide whether you want to go custom or House Blend (standard geometry).
Help you select the level of frame that will best suit your needs.
Suggest a custom frame design, if custom is how you choose to go.
Submit all this information to your frame designer, David Lynskey.

If you have decided on a custom frame, David Lynskey:

Digests the information submitted by Justin.
Interviews you personally.
Based on input from you and your bike fitter, creates a tubing set and a frame design that will deliver your perfect ride.

Your Preliminary Bike Fit

Your purchase begins with a scheduled bike fitting with Justin.  You can expect the process to take up to two hours.

  1. Please bring your current bike and riding gear with you, even if you're not certain of your current fit.
  2. Justin will take all the key measurements, discuss your expectations and your cycling history, suggest a frame design, and submit this information to LPD.
  3. With David Lynskey's input, Chris Lynskey draws a preliminary frame design, which he returns to us for your review, and for your interview with David.

Your Interview with David Lynskey

Your next step will be a phone interview with master frame-builder David Lynskey.  Some aspects of this may seem like a repeat of your Bike Center interview, but for a frame designer, there's no substitute for first-hand information.  David uses the preliminary frame design drawing to tailor his discussion with you, to ensure that you are getting exactly what you want.

After your interview:

  1. David has Chris prepare a final draft of the frame drawing.
  2. We review the drawing.
  3. Once you have approved the drawing yourself, the construction of your frame begins.

Your Post-Assembly Fit

The final step is another session with Justin. Using both the road and a stationary trainer, we fine-tune seat height and handlebar position.
